  • The Acne Cycle

    Friday, February 27, 2015 - 8:00pm

Acne can befall any skin type at almost any age and is triggered by a number of factors, making it a major issue for many people.

Acne starts when keratinized skin cells within hair follicles clump together and form a plug at the follicle's opening where sebum from the sebaceous glands travels to the surface of the skin. The mixture of "stuck' cells and increased sebum feed the bacteria known as P.Acnes in the plugged follicles, causing inflammation - translation: swelling, redness and pain in the form of a pimple.

Do you notice pesky dark spots popping up after a summer in the sun?

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most stubborn skin conditions to treat, and requires persistence, patients and, of course, dedicated use of sunscreen. The good news? It's possible to achieve an even, spot-free complexion safely and effectively.

In these frigid months of winter the weather can be unpredictable. Many of us notice an increase of dry skin. Did you know that the body has a natural defense to keep the skin moisturized? They’re called ceramides.

Stemmed from the Latin cera which means ‘wax’, ceramides are a main component of the outer layer of our skin. Ceramides can also be found as the waxy substance that covers the skin of newborn babies. This might explain why babies have such smooth, soft skin!

Yes. The skin around the eye is much thinner, more delicate, and more sensitive than other facial areas. It has fewer sebaceous glands and is probably the most fragile skin on the entire body, and most likely to show signs of premature aging and sun damage.

Why the use of peptides in our skin care is so important!!

    What are peptides?

Peptides are chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins in the skin. When peptides form a long chain of amino acids, they become proteins. When they are in a short chain of amino acids, they are able to penetrate the top layer of our skin and send signals to our cells to let them know how to function.

Why is my skin so sensitive and dry during chemotherapy and radiation?

On chemotherapy you can expect your skin to become drier and more fragile than ever before. Your nails may become brittle, your skin and nails may become discolored from the medicines you are receiving, and you will even be more sun sensitive from them too.

I have obvious capillaries on the sides of my nostrils. What causes them and how can I treat them?

These are distended capillaries known as telangiectasias. They are not actually broken but are enlarged to the point that they are easily seen. They tend to look worse when the skin is inflamed or hot. They also may be more prominent when the person drinks alcoholic beverages or has high blood pressure.

  • Sunscreen Confusion? I've got your back!

    Friday, August 22, 2014 - 2:00am

First, it is important to know that there are basically 2 types of sunscreen: Chemical and Physical.

Chemical Sunscreens (e.g. avobenzone, helioplex, and other's with unpronounceable names) undergo a chemical reaction with the UV rays, absorbing them and then release the extra energy as heat. The sunscreen's chemical reaction is only for a limited amount of time, hence you will have to reapply after 2-3 hours to ensure you are still protected.

  • Throw this product in the trash - St. Ives Apricot Walnut Scrub

    Saturday, July 26, 2014 - 2:00am

This is one of my biggest 'pet peeve' products to hear my clients are using. Always they're complaining of breakouts, and they think that this can "scrub away" their acne. Some of them are using scrubs like these twice a day. How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin, but I very rarely advise exfoliation more than 4 times a week.
